Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty): Full vs Mini
Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a tummy tuck, is a major surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. Tummy Tuck can be divided into either a full abdominoplasty or a mini or lower abdominoplasty. If the region of patient concern is that portion of the abdomen from the umbilicus down to the pubic region only, then a lower or mini abdominoplasty may beconsidered. If the full abdomen, from the rib cage down to the pubic region, is the area of the patient's concern then a full tummy tuck is the more likely the surgery.
In a full tummy tuck, the skin of the abdomen is lift up through an incision in the lower pubic region. A separate incision is made around the umbilicus. All of the abdominal muscles are tightened in the mid line and the excess skin is removed and the skin closed. A new belly button is created with a full abdominoplasty after all of the excess skin is removed. For a full uncomplicated tummy tuck with liposuction, the patient usually requires at least two weeks for the initial recovery time.
In a Mini or lower abdominoplasty only the skin and muscles from the belly button down are treated. A new belly button is not created but rather pulled tighter. Liposuction of the region above the umbilicus is occasionally performed along with liposuction of the waist line. In an uncomplicated mini-tummy tuck the patient is usually back to work within 5-7 days.
